Prayer for Preparation to Study

Lord, I know you are with me and love me.
Give me peace of mind as I prepare for this time of study.
Help me to focus on my books and notes,
keep me from all distractions so that I will make the best use
of this time that is available to me.

Give me insight that I might understand what I am studying ,
and help me to remember it when the time comes.
Above all, I thank you for the ability to be able to study
and for the many gifts and talents you have given me.
Help me always to use them in such a way
that they honour you and do justice to myself.  Amen

Prayer Before an Examination

Dear Lord, as I take this exam, I thank you that my value
Is not based on my performance, but on your great love for me.
Come into my heart so that we can walk through this time together.
Help me, not only with this test, but the many tests of life that are sure to come my way.

As I take this exam, bring back to my mind everything I studied
and be gracious with what I have overlooked.
Help me to remain focussed and calm, confident in the facts and in my ability,
and firm in the knowledge that no matter what happens today you are there with me.  Amen

Prayer Before Studying the Bible

Master who loves us, shine Your eternal light in our hearts that we may better know you. Help us to fully understand Your gospel message. Instill in us respect for Your holy commandments, that by overcoming our worldly desires we might life a spiritual life of thoughts and deeds which pleases You. We ask this of You, O Christ our god, for You are the light of our souls and bodies and You we glorify with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy good and life-giving Spirit now and forever. Amen.

Shine within my heart, loving Master, the pure light of Your divine knowledge, and open the eyes of my mind that I may understand Your teachings. Instill in me also reverence for Your blessed commandments, so that having conquered sinful desires I may pursue a spiritual way of life, thinking and doing all those things that are pleasing to You. For You, Christ my God, are my light, and to You I give glory together with Your Father and Your Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer Before Reading the Bible – God prepare my Heart for Bible Study

Prayer Before Reading The Holy Bible
Loving Lord and heavenly Father, how I thank You for The holy Scriptures and the truth within its pages.

Thank You for the opportunity to spend time in Your Word and I pray that You would prepare my heart for this time of Bible study.
Help me to set my mind on things above and not on earthly things. Keep away all that would distract me from Your word and develop in me a teachable spirit and ears that listen to Your still small voice, and I pray that the eyes of my heart be open to see all that You want to teach me.

I pray that I may study to show myself approved unto God. Give me insight and understanding as I read and reflect on Your Word and may I mature in the faith, grow in grace and come to a deeper knowledge of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ through this time of Bible study, this I ask in Jesus name, Amen

Prayer Before You Read The Bible

Speding time in the Word is critical to the spiritual growth of anyone who wants to develop a relationship with God. The Bible tells us about God; who He is, His promises for us, the things that anger Him, the things that please Him and so on. However, I believe there’s a difference between reading the Bible for the sake of reading it, story style, and studying the Bible. Take me for example, I’m currently attempting to read through the whole bible before December 22nd of this year and I’m sharing that journey with you guys via my Bible Book Review series. When I’m doing this, I pick a Bible book and I just read it like I would a novel. This is very different from the time I spend in the mornings studying the bible. Bible study is about quality and not quanitity. It’s about getting information from the Bible that will help with deepen my walk with God, it’s about getting a revelation from the Holy Spirit about the word I’ve read and how it is applicable to me.

That last reason is why I believe saying a prayer before you read the Bible is important. Studying the Bible should be treated as time spent with God. Saying a prayer before you read the bible gives you an opportunity to set your intentions for your study time. What do you want the word to mean to you today? Comfort? Strength? Are you looking for specific answers about troubles in your life? Do you need help making a decision? Do you simply just want to hear from God? Whatever your reason for going into the Word, saying a prayer before you read the Bible is your time to invite the Holy Spirit to guide your study time. This prayer I’ve shared is very simple and it’s what I like to read before I start reading my bible. I hope it’s a blessing to you as you spend time with the Lord.

I’m interested in what your process before you read your Bible looks like. Do you say a prayer before you read the bible?

Heavenly Father,

I am so excited to dedicate this time to you today. I pray that the eyes of my heart will be open as I spend time in your word and I ask for total focus while I read. May I be filled with the didactic spirit that allows me to immerse myself in the word, and discover those hidden messages that will be a blessing to me by revealing who you are and your calling for me. You said in your word that I shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God, let this word be food to my soul and victual for my spirit. As I go through my day, I pray that this word shall not depart from my mouth, instead, I will meditate on it day and night so that I may be careful to do what I have read for then I will be prosperous and successful. Thank you Father for access to this wonderful word that is a guide for my life.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Bible Study is no ordinary study. It is a time to learn God’s Word and go deep into the profound meaning and nuances of the words that Almighty God gave to human beings. Imagine that!  You can study the Bible, and even the same stories and verses over and over again, and it will shine a different level of understanding each time.

Therefore, we should go into Bible study with a prepared and attentive heart. Whether you are studying alone with Bible study materials, with a teacher or friend, or in a small group, here is the prayer to set the tone and cultivate the field of your heart to absorb the wisdom and grace:

Dear God,

Thank you for this time of Bible study (with_______). We distinguish this time as a holy hour, and wish to meet you deeply.

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law”. (Psalm 119:18.)

As I open the precious pages of Scripture, I plead for understanding and wisdom in our study.  Only the Word of God can transform us from the inside out and only by heeding to it can I keep my heart and life pure.  Let grace and understanding fill our soul and overflow into our words and actions.

Quiet my soul to hear what you want to say to me.  As Ecclesiastes 5:2 says,  Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few, may I have a humble posture to seek heavenly truth rather than being quick to come to conclusions or speaking my own thoughts, lest I be limited to my own understanding.

Keep the devil away from distracting the study, casting doubt or twisting your precious words or discouraging our hearts in any way.

Let our spirit absorb this spiritual bread and be nourished deeply.  Lord bless this time of Bible study.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

prayer before studying

A Prayer to Pray before Studying God’s Word
By Christina Patterson

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5

The Bible compares the Word of God to a double-edged sword showing its ability to cut the heart and change lives forever. (Hebrews 4:12) Whenever I pick up my Bible I feel the weight of this sword and its power. It makes me feel like a little girl holding a weapon too big to carry. Handling something so powerful is exciting yet intimidating at the same time.

prayer before studying

So I never go into studying God’s Word lightly. We never should. The Word of God has the power to change minds, heal hearts, and cut out sin. However, something so powerful handled the wrong way can also cause harm. I never want to be the one using God’s Word to cause hurt, pain, or confusion. And I’m sure you don’t either.

For this reason, before I open my Bible and heart to the Word of God I first open my mouth in prayer to request specific things from God. And over years of studying my Bible God has faithfully answered this prayer. I want to share my prayer with you in hopes it will increase the quality of your time in God’s Word and help you to handle it’s truths with clarity and confidence.

I always start off praying for discernment and wisdom. James 1:5 tells us:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)

Coming across a scripture I do not understand can be discouraging. But I’ve found that unlocking the mysteries of scripture starts with prayer. All wisdom, knowledge, and correct understating come from God and He is ready to grant us understanding if we are willing to ask.  This also ensures that I am receiving God’s understanding and intention about a scripture and that I am not relying on my own understanding.

Let’s Pray:

“Lord, thank you for this time you’ve given me to open your Word and discover who you are. Thank you that you don’t leave us in the dark about who you are and what you are doing in the world, but that you have revealed yourself and your will through the Bible, your sacred words to us. Lord, I need wisdom as I read your Word. You promise us in James 1:5 that we only have to ask for wisdom to receive it. Lord, please give me your wisdom now as I approach your word. Help me discern the truth of this text. Help me not rely on my own understanding. Thank you God for the clarity, encouragement and hope your Word brings. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.”

Prayer Before Exams

Heavenly and most gracious Father, as I prepare for these exams, I bless Your Holy name. I give You praise, I give You thanks. I give You all the glory you deserve. You alone are worthy to be praised.

Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, I surrender my all to you: my heart, my soul, my mind and my body.

El Elyon, The Most High God, take control, lead me to success. Ever-Present Abba Father, I request that you draw near today as I set out to recap the educational knowledge You have blessed me with.

Guide my thoughts as I recall my past lessons learnt through this semester.

Matthew 6:33-34 Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Focus and direction during study and examination

Father, I pray that my teachers be blessed abundantly, for they aided me, preparing me for success in these exams.

Jehovah Jireh, open up my intellect, give me a mind of peace, allow me to focus and understand my curriculum. Be the directing hand that guides me to study the relevant topics; guide my pen as I recall.

James 1:5  If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Psalm 121:2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Stepping out in faith

Omnipotent Lord, I will step out in faith, confident of excellence as the exam date approaches, for You never gave me a spirit of fear.

I am also confident that my hard work will definitely pay off. Faith without works is dead and the just shall reap rewards.

I proclaim and declare victory, for life and death is at the power of the tongue.

I will rejoice at the sound of my triumph as I exit the exam room on that glorious day. In Jesus’ Mighty name,Amen!!
